The Orange Box (PS3) Description

The Orange Box from Valve is a real bargain for anyone yet to be sucked into the Half-Lifestyle erm, style. Maybe that should be Half-Life lifestyle? Whatever, The Orange Box - The most complete HL collection yet - should not be passed up. What do you get for your money? Let's see… The headline game is HL2: Episode Two, at the time of this pack's release, the latest offering in the series. Earth is being picked to the bone by an alien infestation. Resources are depleted and the population dwindling. As bespectacled hero Gordon Freeman, you're thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong you unleashed back at the Black Mesa Research Facility. Along the way, you'll be joined by members of the resistance, survivors in a desperate battle against the totalitarian alien menace of the Combine. Portal is an experimental training course sponsored by Aperture Science Laboratories. Throughout the experiment, you are asked to perform various tasks. Listen carefully to all instructions and you will most likely not be injured. When - or if - you complete the initial course, advanced training will become available from the main menu. Team Fortress 2 is a team-based multiplayer experience and the sequel to the game that put class-based multiplayer team warfare on the map. The game packs a wide variety of classes which provide a broad range of tactical abilities and personalities, and lend themselves to a variety of player skills. The Orange Box also includes Half-Life 2 and Episode One.

The Orange Box gets 5 out of 5 stars just for having Portal on the disc. But obviously, there's more than that here. We have what is probably the best value package of games on one single disc I've ever seen. Containing the first Half Life 2 game, then also the 2nd two Half Life 2 episodes and then on top of that, Team Fortress 2, and the aforementioned Portal. Lets start with Half Life 2. It's aged a little now, but there are still a surprising number of people haven't played it as yet. HL2 was, and still is an excellent game, and having Episode 1 and 2 on the same disc makes it all the more appealing, because you can play all 3 back to back, getting a real sense of the story. Whilst the graphics are showing their age a little, it's still an engaging game, and having the new Episode 2 to complete this thrilling series is kinda the icing on the cake. I would recommend, nay consider FORCING any FPS fan that hasn't played HL2 to play these games. They are awesome. Next up, Team Fortress 2. Admittedly, I'm not going to have much to say about this game. I played it some, and it was OK... it's basically a dedicated online multiplayer shooter, with different classes of characters offering different attributes and abilities. There weren't that many people online at this, and because I didn't play it much, I don't want to say too much more. All I can say is, it wasn't bad, I just didn't play it much. Whether that means it was boring, I don't know, but nothing drew me back to it for sure. Finally, we have Portal. Oh yes. This is without doubt the finest example of a "B side" game being included with a main franchise, and the B side kicks the hell out of it's big daddy. Portal is loaded with puzzle solving FPS elements that completely mess with your senses and belief of direction and physics. It's truly staggering how cleverly this game was put together. The black humour contained within is also hilarious, and fans of Valve games will definitely have a good time here. Honestly, Portal is perfect. It's so perfect, that I hope, infact DEMAND that they do not make a sequel and ruin this beautiful experience... like cult comedy shows, it should do it's "1 series", make a roar amongst the fans, and then gloriously disappear, becoming just a famed memory. I've no doubt some developer somewhere will try to copy it and will fail miserably... Overall, it's aching how much value there is in this box. You can get it for just over a tenner now, which is staggering. Buy it, buy it, buy it.

The main strength of this game is its graphics. To be honest it felt like I was walking through a piece of art as I moved through the levels. I found the gameplay and the stregth of the story to lack a lot of the innovation that has been brought to the first person shooter genre over the last couple of years and in this sense the game feels a little aged. Its not the best game that I have ever played, and to be honest I got a little bored in the main story mode, and its definately the multiplayer that makes this game worth renting.

Half Life 2 and its sequels are legendary FPS games, but to me they seem a little 'old school' now, maybe my demands are just too high. The set piece design is great, and the physics system was innovative at the time, I just didn't 'love' it as much as Call of Duty 4 or Killzone 2. Graphics are decent, but there is some slowdown when things get hectic on the PS3 version. The orange box also comes with Team Fortress 2, basically and online shooter with 9 classes to use from chaingun wielding 'heavies' to longer range snipers, everyone can find a class they like, its just a shame the player count isnt very high (on PS3 that is I don't know about the 360). But for me the best game in this package is portal. I can't begin to explain the concept but for me its one of the best game's I've ever played, I can't find anything wrong with it, and it really does work your brain at times. You owe it to yourself to experience this game. Overall its a fantastic value for money package, expecially if you love half life more than I do.

Greatest value for money for any game out there. The main draw of this game for me was not the seminal Half-Life 2 bits, but Portal and Team Fortress. Portal is worth renting this game for alone, it's a sheer joy to play and can leave you scratching your head a few times. It's funny, clever and although not a massively long game, it's got a lot of replayability. Team Fortress 2, is a great team based cartoony blast-a-thon and with the right people can be really good fun, however it does have a habbit of being v glitchy now and again. Half Life 1 was a great FPS, and the sequel is great, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the original, you don't really need to have played the first one to enjoy the sequel, but if you do have prior knowledge you'll get more out of it. The graphics for all the games are top notch and will take you some time to get through all the content that the orange box contains.
