The Simpsons Game (PS3) Description

The Simpsons is an international treasure, no messing. For those who like their animated comedy with a hefty dose of sarcasm, satire and plain ol' daftness, well, The Simpsons has been doing it best for longest. The good news for gamers and fans of the show is that the family from 742 Evergreen Terrace finally gets the game it deserves in the shape of…aww, I've forgotten the title. D'oh! The Simpsons Game! That's it! The thing is, it's not merely a Simpsons game. There are 16 parody-filled episodes to play through, and if you're a regular gamer and/or film-watcher, then you'll recognise some of the blockbusters the developer is having fun with, by inhabiting the films and games in question with Homer and company. Without wanting to blow the plot, expect to see some Harry Potter-esque scenes along with what looked to us like an Eragon/Lord of the Rings/Reign of Fire mickey-take, and many more. Along with playable Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, there are around 170 characters with whom to interact, including Mr Burns and his lovelorn PA Smithers, the hapless Springfield police department, and an angry-looking primate that bears a remarkable resemblance to Homer. The story has been crafted by the writers of the show and the movie, and we all know how funny those are. The combination of great gameplay and genuinely funny characters will ensure that fans will be delighted with The Simpsons Game, and there might be a few converts along the way too.

We've been treated to a few decent Simpson's games since Simpson's Hit & Run a few years back. This latest game, based loosely on the recent film, is really quite a lot of fun. For Simpson fans particularly, there are a lot of nods and winks to well known Simpson's-fare, with some levels directly lifted from scenes that we've seen over the years in The Simpson's. Homer's world of donuts and sweets in particular is a great example of them dropping you directly into something we've seen in the series. The cut scenes and the in-game plot are all highly amusing and follow some of the moments from the film too. You can tell that the writers and cast of the show have all got really involved with this, as it's chock full of moments that you could put on par with their excellent shows. As mentioned, fans will definitely have a lot to like because of this, it's basically like having your own interactive Simpson's episode. The controls can be admittedly finicky in places, and after the best of the scenes have gone by, the ending does drift off a little. Stick with it though, so you don't miss any of the scenes, it's great in the end. Simpsons fans have probably already played this, so if you're just looking for a good platforming and fun game, you should definitely rent this at least, if not buy it by now as it's less than a tenner.

I wanted to like this, I really really did as I love the TV show, and while it is funny, the game is not good. Maybe if you were young, it would entertain you for a while, but there just isnt enough there to keep me interested. Simply, this is a bad platforming style game that has a glossy exterior, but once you delve inside, you will find a shallow and boring game that is very forgetable.
