Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) Description

It doesn't matter what century it is. Democracy has its enemies, and from time to time those enemies need shooting at. With that in mind, Infinity Ward has taken its ever popular Call of Duty series out of the 1940s and World War II and into the modern era. You might have left behind the moral comfort to be had from knowing you're fighting Nazis, but now you get to play with all kinds of fancy modern doodads. Fighting as a U.S. Marine or a British SAS soldier, you'll travel the world, dropping into troubled hotspots through a twisting and turning story to defend truth, justice and…well, whatever qualifies as the American way these days. You'll fight with any of 70 new weapons and pieces of kit, including assault rifles with laser sites, claymore mines, .50 caliber sniper rifles, and M-249 SAW machine guns. Other fancy gadgets include night-vision goggles and ghillie suits for you to do your stealthy thing with. Naturally, it all comes with a dollop of next gen gloss, with the graphics overhauled and improved audio which includes realistic battle communications chatter. The multiplayer aspect builds on the experience provided in Call of Duty 2, with a create a class option allowing players to customise their gear, unlockables and perks coming out of experience points, and matchmaking and leaderboards.

The Call Of Duty series has always been reliable for intense, scripted action. You never had to worry about getting lost, and were always guaranteed some spectacular battle set-pieces. However, by CoD3 the whole WWII thing started getting a bit old, and the series needed an overhaul. CoD4 does this with style by bringing it into a contemporary/near future environment...and it works brilliantly. The missions are brilliant, ranging from stealth to big-scale battles to spec-ops. There are some brilliant and shocking plot twists and you really feel like the world's safety hangs in the balance. There is a good array of modern weaponry and elements like night vision goggles or thermal vision from a chopper feel incredibly realistic and immerse you deeper into the game. As with all CoD games, the single-player feels a bit short but this means that, rather than the story getting a bit tedious, you simply want MORE. The multiplayer isn't my favourite element of this game, as it chooses to be arcadey rather than strategic, with there being big chance that you'll get killed by an enemy air-raid or chopper as soon as you spawn. This game must be played; it has brought the series into the 21st century in style and is the main reason for the incredible hype surrounding Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare is quite simply the best FPS game you can buy today [addendum - MW2 is out now, so this is second best ha ha]. It really is astounding how good this game is. Lets start with the single player. What a ride! The CoD single players of late have been criticised (me included) for being too short, but this just clearly shows that it's so good, you don't want it to end. You'll get about 6-8 hours play on your first time through the campaign, so relish it and don't rush it your first play.... Yes, it's a little short, but it's so engaging, you won't care. I won't reveal the plot, but lets just say there are one or two explosive moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat(!) The graphics are excellent - not the best I've seen, but then there is a lot going on which keeps the polygon count a little lower on the character models. However, this isn't really noticable, since the characters are modelled and animated so well, they really do look convincing. There are some standout moments like manning the guns of the C-130 in the sky, which turns your view into a military grade thermal imaging camera, and it is utterly, 100% convincing and authentic. Now for the multiplayer - what else can you say, except it is the finest example of the FPS multiplayer genre today. You have excellent precise controls for your character, large expansive maps [and a good selection of them] and a class system that ranks you up the more you play it, eventually making your character much harder to beat on the battlefield. This system of reward for playing is outstanding, and you will find yourself coming back night after night just to improve that rank. With the exception of it's sequel, nothing can match Modern Warfare for multiplayer FPS, pure and simple. Overall, Call of Duty : Modern Warfare is a game that should be played by everyone who likes playing games. Everyone.

This is one of the best 1st person shooters out there on any console. The graphics are amazing and game play is excellent. The single player has alot going on and keeps you in action at all times. It can take roughly over 5 hours to complete and keeps you on your toes all the way through. The multiplayer is what elevates this to another level. There are levels to upgrade your character unlocking more weapons and tools of destruction the more you play the more you want to level up. Even when you reach level 55 the highest you can prestige and reset your stats and do it again to unlock even more weapons. This game has so much to offer in single player and multiplayer, purchase or rent you cannot go wrong.Excellent!

Wow. This is arguably the greatest game out on PS3 at the moment. The single player campaign is almost flawless with the enemy reacting intelligently and the amount of detail put into the maps and the guns is remarkable. You play as a soldier in the British SAS and the US Marine Corps and the story is gritty and incredibly exciting. As for the multiplayer, it is in a league of it's own. Moving up ranks and unlocking new weapons and perks is terribly addicting and the varied maps make the game fresh and thrilling. This is a must-have game for all PS3 owners.
