Folklore (PS3) Description

From the mind of former Capcom developer Yoshiki Okamoto, who's worked on titles such as Devil May Cry, Onimusha and Resident Evil, comes Folklore. Spinning out of western... well, folklore, the game mixes Irish, Ancient Greek and Roman mythologies to take PlayStation 3 owners on a bizarre tour of the English countryside. The game follows Keats, a chap who finds himself in the unfortunate position of being a realist who works on a third rate occult magazine. One day, he receives a strange phonecall from a woman asking for help. He wouldn't be much of a journalist if that didn't grab his attention, so off he trots to the village of Doolin, where he finds the woman already murdered. There, he runs across a young woman named Ellen, who spends her days wandering the English countryside in search of folk tales. She finds herself in Doolin looking for the mother she long thought dead. A mix of adventure, turn-based action and RPG, Folklore draws players through seven unique realms, ranging from the Undersea City to the never-ending maze of the Endless Corridor. If you feel like a spot of dark fantasy to see you through the long, dark winter nights, this might tickle your nickel.

Folklore is an odd game. It's 2 games in one. You have your typical RPG elements where you battle monsters, but battle them by using monsters you've caught, which brings a collectible element to gameplay. Then you have the Adventure game where you're trying to unravel the mystery of Doolin. You play as one of two characters, and can swap between them during chapters, both their stories are different but they intertwine and the actual mystery is pretty engaging. The RPG mechanics are pretty solid and the game has an interesting story telling method by showing certain scenes as your average cutscene, or some scenes in a comic book style, which is jarring at first but soon becomes familiar. Although the two different gameplay elements are well done, they just don't gel. I found myself wanting it to be JUST a murder mystery or JUST an RPG as the two gameplay mechanics are so different. A brave attempt at trying something new, but I found myself becoming un-interested in this after a while. Worth a rent.

Its slow, the graphics blend so much its hard to tell land from interactive points. The combat system is just straight up stupid. Halfway through the game, you're spending more time trying out new folks to fight with that you die just due to the fact 80% of everything you've collected and WORKED TO LEVEL UP wont hit anything. The story sucks, the characters have as much feeling as a couple of stones at the bottom of the lake. I CANNOT STAND THE TEXT IN THIS GAME. I swear, you better have PERFECT vision and SIT IN FRONT OF THE DAMN SCREEN if you plan to read half the crap they throw on the screen. But, I bothered to play it though. All and all, its not even a rent, play it if you can steal a copy, cause god knows they stole my bucks.

The graphics are nice and it's not a bad game in any way but you never really feel like you want to complete it......

The story is very engaging, and uniquely lets you see if from two points of view, with plot twists, and surprises right till the end. The game mechanics are similar to Pokèmon, you fight folks to ware them down, capture the folks, level them up, and pick a team of four for the area you are in. but the game is hard. And even though you play as two characters, you are basically laying the same levels twice. The only difference is that the folks are different, and so are the boss's. The game also has side quests, however it never really lets you do them. You have to make the effort to get out of the story to go on the side quests, and these usually make you go through a level already been to, make you do something sometimes with folk restrictions, for some items, some of which never seem to have any use in the game. Despite its age, it has some really good graphics, but the way it tells the story, sometimes, is a bit old fashioned when compared to other ps3 games. It also suffers from frequent loading, when you change folks it's a 5 second load, when you get a important item, 10 seconds...little stuff like that which over the length of the game can be annoying. Overall I give 4 stars, great story, different game mechanics, hampered though by being a early ps3 game.

Five minutes into this game I was sick of it! There are far too many cut scenes, and the battles are just repetative. I think it reminded me of a Final Fantasy game, (which I dont like, by the way). This could have been a good game, the graphics are excellent, but let down by the actual gameplay! Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance but, to be honest, I just couldnt be bothered with it
