Blacksite: Area 51 (PS3) Description

We all thought that Area 51, the heart of conspiracy theory, was full of those mildly cute little grey aliens with the big heads. It turns out we were wrong. It's also full to the brim of great big ugly aliens of the distinctly scary kind. Unfortunately, when things go wrong down at Area 51 and scores of the nasties escape into the surrounding area, someone has to deal with it. That would be you. As the leader of an elite Special Forces squad, players will head into the desert to face unearthly threats with nothing but their guts, savvy, and some big ol' guns. And some team mates. In fact, as well as engaging in first-person shooting action, players will actively lead their squad. Do it right, and your squad will serve you well. Get it wrong, and morale will sink and you'll find yourself fighting an uphill battle. Not to worry, however, you'll be able to command your squad to perform tasks such as planting C-4 and sniping at enemy guard towers with a unique one button command system. It comes with the classic range of online modes, including DeathMatch, Team DeathMatch and Capture the Flag. Midway has also thrown in some unique modes for good measure including Human vs. Reborn and Siege mode.

This game is way short. I started the game one afternoon and played for about 4 hours before realising that i was on the last level after I turned it off. The vehicle controls are crap as you only use the analog sticks and not the buttons for acceleration and break. However the story is ok so it is not a complete disaster, but do not play this game unless you have time to kill. Killzone, cod4 and battlefield bad company just outclass it in every way.

This game is so broken and wasn't ready when it was shipped out. Quite clearly an attempt to get some income in before they folded.......

The above average story was all that convinced me to play this until the end. Apart from the final section the graphics are poor, but the most disappointing aspect was how many bugs and crashes the game contained. The squad based gameplay was nothing more than a gimmick, the most common use requiring you to trivially command a member of your squad to open every door that you have to use. There are definitely far more competent 1st person shooter efforts available.

Quite poor considering what the PS3 can do, the game play and in-game graphics reminded me of an X-Box game (previous one, not the 360) which wouldn't have been bad a few years ago but it's not good enough for today's consoles. Shame as the story is intriguing but the game doesn't live up to it.
