God of War 2 (PS2) Description

Kratos is not finished yet. Oh no. He's back, and looking mighty scary too. You'd think life would be pretty hunky dory, having dethroned Ares and taken up the mantle of God of War. But no, some ancient deities are just never happy. Kratos is still dealing with continued torment (He's so Emo! - music-loving Ed.) so he's off once again to journey to the ends of the Earth and do that which neither man nor God has ever managed: change his destiny. We don't know what that means, to be perfectly honest. Story points are still a bit evasive at the moment. What we can say though, is that this is looking like a scorcher of a game. If Sony succeeds in making this even marginally better than the first one then it'll be an instant classic. The development team is starting with the God of War game mechanic already in place, leaving more time to include features that they just didn't have time for in the first. We're going to see an expanded collection of combat moves, meaning fans will be able to take their favorite combos from the first game and expand on them with new moves and element-based magic. There'll also be an expansion of the cast, with the return of old favourites such as Cyclops and Cerebus, as well as new enemies and appearances from various ancient Greek Gods and heroes (fingers crossed for a Kevin Sorbo cameo) who will grant new weapons and abilities. One example of these are the Icarus wings, granting flight and getting things airborne (although bearing in mind this is the little alabaster guy who piddles in your rich aunty's fountain, Sony might be running the risk of camping up their scarred and scary anti-hero). Throw in an increased number of puzzles intricately woven into the gameplay and more treacherous terrain on which to test your skills, and this is looking like a pearl of a game. Sharpen up your warblades, folks - this is going to be big and nasty. And in a good way!

You oughta know by now that God of War is about the best new franchise in gaming right now. Following on from the first bloodthirsty masterpiece, God of War II sees Kratos reprising his fight against the Gods in a direct continuation of the first story. Of course, it doesn't stray from the formula of the first game too much, so you can expect the huge environmental puzzles to progress, lots of very nasty enemies to rip apart, and some of finest looking cut scenes in any game ever. Period. There are some interesting new elements to the fighting this time that has Kratos able to do thing like ride cyclops and control them to fight others... akin to jumping on a Chicken Leg in Golden Axe and attacking your enemies, except in GoW II, you will do some damage to the cyclops to make him stumble, then execute a quick time event to get on his back. As you do so, you now control the cyclops and can use his attacks to deal damage to your enemies. This is a very fun and interesting addition to the already large stable of Kratos' abilities. The level design is nothing less than perfect. Although linear to a degree, it has just the right environment design to trick you into thinking this isn't so, and also has some backtracking when solving puzzles, allowing you to really explore every corner. The graphics themselves outside of the cutscenes are also astounding and are a fine tribute to the PS2s often under-estimated power. There is a huge amount of detail in everything from the characters to the levels, and it all kicks along at a steady 60hz, rarely if at all slowing down with large numbers of enemies on screen. The boss battles are as epic as ever. The game is just outstanding. The only fault I can see in GoW II is that it ends. That's it. We want more! Roll on Feb 2010 with GoW III !!!

The first GOW was an excellent game, and just when you thought it couldn't get any better along came this masterpiece. The graphics are awesome for ps2 standards, a truly great game, one of the best on ps2...

One of the finest, visceral and exciting games of the PS2. The God of War formula is fairly simple: rip two shades of sugar out of your enemies. It's pretty much just fighting with a few platforming sequences, and epic boss battles. The graphics are truly astounding, the progression of the story is just perfect and for a Playstation 2 game, this is the closest thing to perfection I have seen. Definitely worth a rental if not a full purchase.
