Mario Party 8 (Wii) Description

Crazy minigames, board game lunacy and more surprises than you can shake a Wii Remote at are all here in force in Mario Party 8, the first in the series to appear on Wii. Every character you could expect to see in the game is here - Yoshi, Peach, Mario and the rest - along with new faces Blooper and Hammer Bro, who previously appeared for the first time in the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES. A hyperactive MC has invited the crew to his carnival which appears at first to resemble nothing much more than a board game. However, at the end of each turn, each player is faced with a nifty mini-game. These games utilise the Wii Remote's motion, pointing and button control in a variety of ways. This really is the perfect game to play against friends and family thanks to the multiplayer mode which allows you and your friends to team up against each other in both two versus two and one against all challenges. Willing players can watch a tutorial that shows them what to do with the remote so no-one feels left out. Mario Party 8 also includes four more minigame-infused kinds of special games, such as Tic-Tac Drop, where players earn the right to put the next mark on the board by winning a minigame.

The Mario Party games started on the N64 and 7 home console versions later and we get the originaly titled Mario Party 8. With Mario Party you know what you're going to get, aggressive AI, frantic mini-games, a couple of varying board layouts and a bit of strategy thrown in there. This is a board game, where at the end of everyone's turns you play a mini game with everyone else. The mini games included aren't the best from the series long backlog, but they're adequate for the package. This game though doesn't feel like it was made with Wii in mind, the wii mote isn't used to it's best extent. The boards have different rules this time round, with a monopoly themed one being my favourite of the bunch. If you play this game with the computer AI you WILL get frustrated, it feels as if they manage to get the right roles on the dice everytime. Recommended to be played with friends.

If you have played any previous version of Mario Party then this game will hold few surprises. The major differences fall in the slightly more detailed graphics given by the additional horsepower of the Wii and the 'Wii-mote' controlled mini-games. The slightly odd thing about the games graphics is that the menus are presented in 16:9 widescreen, whilst the actual main part of the game itself is in 4:3 aspect ratio !! All in all, a good 'party' game for up to four players, but as a standalone single player game it fails. Rent if you have friends coming over or need to keep multiple kids entertained, but dont buy !

Some of the minigames are pretty sweet but the actual mini game part of it is very very annoying. It takes far too long to get into. Too much text. The annoying dude with the hat got on my nerves. When you were playing - it always had to be 4 players whether that was 2 Human and 2 Computer or 3 Human and 1 Computer. This mean't the game really dragged on. Minigames were good at times but it just didn't get me in the mood at all.
