Ace Combat X - Skies of Deception (PSP) Description

Namco's Ace Combat series is possible the most venerable of all aviation combat games. The first console version came out in 1995 on the original the Sony Playstation, and since then there have been a host of versions on PlayStation and PS2... but Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception marks the series' debut on PSP. The same thrills that users may be familiar with from PS2 version is carried over to Sony's shiny handheld... and the conversion works wonderfully. The smaller screen makes the graphics look better than ever, and the PSP handles the 3D graphics with aplomb. As with previous games in the series, Skies of Deception centres around mission-based aerial combat. After selecting your plane and equipping it with missiles you take to the skies in search of foreign bogeys. Once they are in your sites, you chase them down and loose a volley of laser guided missiles at them. Then repeat until the mission is complete. Occasionally, your mission is punctuated with the need to attack some ground based targets - and if you've chosen the correct ordnance at mission start - you'll be able to do this with ease. if, however, you didn't pay attention during the mission briefing, you'll have a fruitless and trustrating time until you get shot to bits, and start again with better chosen weaponry. All in all, it's fine fun. And if you have friends with PSPs, you'll be able to take them on in co-operative and competitive scenarios using ad-hoc wireless network play. When your friends aren't around, you can hone your skills on 15 all new maps created specifically for this version.

I have always been a fan of the more arcadey type flight sims, and had always wanted one on handheld - this game certainly does not disappoint. First off - it doesn't feel like a compromise from a full-blown console title. That's the amazing thing. There are plenty of good long levels, and 15 different maps if I recall the correct number. The missions are all structured as you would expect for an Ace Combat title - kill x number of bogies (yes, har har tee hee he said bogies), move to next point, take out large bomber etc etc. The missions do stay varied to fit in with the next available upgraded aircraft, so you'll find as you have a new aircraft available that it's attack mode (air 2 air, air 2 ground etc) will be relevant to the units you're about to battle for the most part. This certainly helps your first play through until you get really familiar with the planes and unlock all the other new ones. Eventually, you'll be that good and will have unlocked so much, that you'll just get used to picking the right aircraft for the right job each mission. I've no doubt you'll be playing this multiple times all the way through like I did, taking on each difficulty setting. There's certainly a lot of replay value with this title. The graphics are awesome - seriously. Among the best I've seen on PSP, and wouldn't look out of place on the PS2 itself. The environments below you are all nicely detailed and flash by at convincing speeds when you fly low. Of course, get too close and those textures do go a bit ugly, but you have to expect that with a platform of the PSPs power. It's still very impressive stuff. The sound is also excellent - from the rousing orchestral scores that fade in and out as the action hots up, to the expected missile explosions, bullet ricochets and after burner roar - it's all there. Best experienced on a good pair of soundproofing headphones, it will blow you away. The multiplayer is also excellent, offering local wi-fi support for competitive and explorative play. If you have a friend with a PSP, you can certainly extend this titles value even further. Consider that you WILL be annihilating your friends at first though, unless they've been playing the single player along with you. You're experience of the main game will certainly give you a competitive advantage for a short while, so relish it. I have to admit, you probably do have to be a fan of flight sims to really get the most out of this game, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. After all, this could be a game that gets you hooked on what is an awesome genre when executed properly. Ace Combat certainly is just that - executed properly. I'm yet to play a bad one from this series. Easily the most recommendable title of it's genre on the PSP.
