LocoRoco (PSP) Description

LocoRoco is like no other game you have ever played before, with hypnotic backgrounds, crazy music and of course, LocoRoco - gelatinous, blob-like, free-rolling creatures, that have their own happy language. Gamers must guide their LocoRoco through the various worlds using the simple tilting and bouncing gameplay mechanic - with the use of the PSP's left and right shoulder buttons to gently tilt the ground in either direction. As their world starts to tilt, the wobbly LocoRoco just cannot keep still, rolling around and up ramps into the air. As you guide the lovable little chaps, rolling and bouncing along, you must help them over obstacles by giving the ground a bump. By holding down both shoulder buttons, the bump sends them flying into the air. Each world is littered with various enemies and splinters that the LocoRoco's must avoid - turn tail or jump over them, otherwise they will explode. LocoRoco love fruit, and eating it makes them grow big and fat. The fatter they are at the end of each level, the more points you will get. However, a fat LocoRoco isn't very good at getting through tight spaces, so you can split them into many small LocoRoco to let them pass. Remember to keep an eye out for hidden rooms, where LocoRoco can collect various secret items and treats.

This really is one of the great, platform definitive titles for the PSP console. LocoRoco is probably the most instantly recognisable new character on the video game scene in recent years. The game itself is one of those rare breeds of "so simple, it's genius" games that are pretty much accessible to anyone to play, whether new or versed in gaming. The controls are effectively split between controlling Loco, and controlling the environment - I.E. one single button (the "O" button) when pressed will make Loco jump a distance. A slightly longer hold, a slightly longer jump - you get the idea. You also have buttons to "break up" Loco, and also reassemble him. Basically, Loco is made up of lots of little Locos that you find as you advance through the levels. Some are hidden, so you get bonuses for finding all the available ones on the level... as you find them, you can press the reassemble button to effectively suck up the newly found smaller Loco into your main mass, effectively making Loco one giant ball made up smaller ones. However - you will come across all sorts of obstacles which are impossible to pass through when this size, so you'll inevitably have to hit the break up button, where Loco will break down into all the singular smaller Locos to be able to pass through smaller areas and such. So next is the buttons controlling the environment. Hitting L or R on the shoulder buttons will make the levels "tilt" left or right, so Loco in his round mass, can then roll in the direction you tilt. So you have this balancing act of moving Loco himself, and also the environment, to help him traverse it and reach the end. Some of the puzzles are genius and are very varied and you'll find yourself coming back to better scores and Locos found on levels as you become a better player. The graphics are all lovely and fit with the theme of the game entirely, along with the little tinkly background tunes and sound effects. It runs at a completely smooth rate from my experience, which helps in the reaction times when you have to manouver Loco over a tricky area whilst using the tilt buttons. Overall, this is easy to recommend to any PSP owner, whatever genre of games you usually like. This is different and fresh enough to attract even the most hardened of blood soaked FPS fans, and deserves to be in your PSP collection.
