Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) Description

If ever a game of recent times was notable for generating quite considerable hype and anticipation, then Grand Theft Auto 3 was it. The move into 3D for the already popular 'crime simulator' was bound to cause a stir amongst its fanbase. More importantly, so was the fact that this was its first port onto Sony's PS2. Surprisingly for a game released amidst such a buzz, it didn't disappoint. It had its flaws, granted, but on the whole the game's recreation of a virtual city in which one could live out one's devilish alter-ego took the games industry by storm. One year on and the game's sequel is causing just as big a stir amongst gamers, if not more. This time around the premise remains the same, but we find ourselves in the decade of big hair, excess and pastel suits. As the blurb reads: Welcome to Vice City, Welcome to the 1980's. Returning to the streets of Liberty City after a long stretch in the nick, Tommy Vercetti is sent to Vice City by his old boss, Sonny Forelli, so he can keep a low profile. All does not run quite so smoothly in the glamorous, hedonistic metropolis of Vice City, however, and soon Tommy finds himself set up and left with no money and no merchandise. Sonny wants his money back, but the biker gangs, Cuban gangsters, and corrupt politicians stand in his way. Most of Vice City seems to want Tommy dead. His only answer is to fight back and take over the city himself. Vice City itself is a huge urban sprawl, ranging from the beach to the swamps and from the glitz to the ghetto. A friendly place, it's populated by a diverse cast of characters, including athletes, pop stars, real estate agents, politicians and trailer trash. It seems everyone is moving to Vice City. As usual, an immense amount of commandeer-able vehicles give our anti-hero freedom of the city. Performance cars and bikes can be 'borrowed', as can more novel vehicles like golf carts and powerboats. Better still, you can even nick a helicopter and take in the scenery from the air. What are you waiting for!?

Vice City is in the unenviable position of being the middle-game in one of the best gaming trilogies of all time; therefore it's neither 'the one that started it all' or 'the last one that shows how far the series has come'. Nevertheless, Vice City is an excellent game that, while not making as big an initial impression on me as GTA3, is a definite improvement on it's predecessor. Firstly, Vice City itself is possibly my favourite GTA city of all, being set in s sunny, campy 80s Miami-like city. The plot here takes its influences mainly from films like Scarface and Carlito's Way, though there are plenty of other references along the way. The graphics are much prettier and more colourful than GTA3, and it generally has a fun 'retro' vibe going. There is a much wider selection of weapons here, including the infamous chainsaw and minigun, and your character now has a voice! (Goodfellas' Ray Liotta, no less). The story includes a more varied array of characters, who are even crazier than those in GTA3, making them more interesting and likeable. Adding to the sense of a rags-to-riches story, you can now also take over businesses and buy various properties to guarantee a regular income as well as have increasingly stylish places to keep your cars. The city is much bigger than GTA 3 and feels more like a real city, with rich areas, Cuban ghetto's as well as the usual industrial and commercial districts. The vehicle roster has also been taken to the next level, now featuring bikes and helicopters, which are possibly the most fun vehicles in the game! As I said, Vice City will probably be least remembered due to being the middle title in the series, but it's improvements on GTA3 paved the way for the future, and there's no GTA city quite like Vice City.

In my personal opinion the best game from the whole franchise. Vice city is beautifully designed, the story is brilliants, the attentions to detail is amazing and the soundtrack rocks, which top off one of the best game to be released on the Playstation 2 console.

This is the best old generation Grand Theft Auto, it had a killer soundtrack and expanded on GTA3's features. The story features some excellent moments and memorable scenes, including a Scarface style mansion assault. V cool.
