Frontlines: Fuel of War Description

War (huh!). What is it good for? THQ will give you a startlingly honest answer to that question. It's good for keeping your car going. Frontlines: Fuel of War forgoes the trappings of the fight for democracy and other such idealogical trimmings and drops you knee deep in a war for oil raging across the Middle East. The very fate of civilisation hangs in the balance, with the Western Coalition (the US and Europe) duking it out against the Red Star Alliance (Russia and China, if you hadn't guessed). The single player campaign moves players through this epic storyline, which takes place in the near future but will look hauntingly familiar to anyone who watches the news. It's the multiplayer mode that's the star of the show, however. The online component offers a whopping 50 players the opportunity to duke it out in one epic match. Players can go at it on foot or jump into a tank, hummer or even a jet fighter. Further enriching things is the opportunity to take on different roles. As well as the usual classes available, players can opt to be the guy who (for example) calls in the airstrike, or activates the EMP weapon to disable enemy vehicles. So, war's good for keeping your car full of oil, but it also might be good for gleaning a bit of dirty pleasure with 49 of your close friends.

Average, Very Average. I'll be honest, Frontlines comes nowhere near being the best war game around, but its nevertheless quite fun to play. The aiming controls are slightly jerky, and its some of your opponents seem to be able to survive several bullets to the head while others go down as easily as Didier Drogba. Equally confusing are the graphical quirks that can leave comrades flip-flopping across the floor around you after they get killed. That said, its certainly not terrible and the "frontline" provides a welcome change from the norm (even if the way enemies appear when you take an objective is annoyingly unrealistic). Also the gimmicks of tank and helicopter driving and, in particular, the use of remote controlled mini tanks and helis give a childish enjoyment to the game. Not bad but not great. Average.

What an terrible game. Its like something on the old XBox. Avoid it - There are far better FPS games out there
Features
  • Tomorrow's weapons, today - As depicted in FFOW, the Western Coalition and the Red Star Alliance have combined their military research and budgets, and the result is over 60 next-gen vehicles and weapons inspired by military designs for the near future. These include remote controlled drones, gun cams, and next-generation counter-measure systems, all of which are player-controllable.

  • Advanced information sharing - Use high-tech combat systems to collect and relay recon, targeting, and threat information between team-mates. Target acquisition and sharing between vehicle occupants is just one example of FFOW's focus on an advanced team play experience.

  • Customization - The customization system allows players to develop their soldier to fit their play style by choosing a weapons loadout, as well as a technical specialization (role). As the game progresses, each role will upgrade, providing advanced equipment and abilities. It mixes RPG-like depth with the accessibility of a fast-paced FPS.

  • Frontline combat system - The main game mechanic featured in FFOW in both single player and multiplayer modes is the ability to join the forces on the front line. This front expands across large portions of a mission and will require a firm strategy to achieve the objectives in order to move this front forward. Not only does this system keep the battle centric and players in the midst of the action, it gives a unique sense of advancement as your Division is rewarded with territory for their victories.

  • Choose your path to victory - Take advantage of a sandbox of destructible elements to create a unique path and strategy through each mission. Instead of failing and re-playing the same sequence of events, players can 'chip-away' with varied approaches, allowing diverse missions with high replay value.
