The Darkness Description

The Darkness follows the life and loves of Jackie Estacado who, on the advent of his 21st birthday, finds himself with the dubious honour of possessing the Darkness, a sinister supernatural entity that pre-dates human history. Yeah, that's right. On your 21st, you were/will be drinking bizarre cocktails invented by your mates involving vodka, beer and mud, and this guy's dealing with evil from the dawn of time. Since he just happens to be a hitman for the Mafia, much bloodshed ensues. For the game, much of the fantasy that decorates the comics has been ditched in favour of a gritty, more horror-like feel. Jackie's not the pretty-boy he was in the comics: he hangs about in seedy back alleys and subways rather than glamorous night clubs, and he looks a bit Goth instead of a bit Gucci. You won't see fancy armour or drop-dead-gorgeous angels in the game outing. Instead, expect a long leather coat and ugly mobsters. From seemingly simple beginnings as a noir-ish crime exploit, things quickly get nasty. The power of the Darkness imbues Jackie with a number of unpleasant attributes that are gained as you progress through the game. These often (but not always) take the form of be-tentacled creatures. They're capable of numerous ghastly feats aimed at solving puzzles and eviscerating your enemies. Basically, if you want to be the nastiest thing on the screen, this one's for you.

One Of The Most Enjoyable FPS I Have Played In A Long Long Time. The Story Is More Like A Film Than A Game & The Graphics Are The Best Ive Seen From The 360. The Action Is Bloody But Fun And Dosnt Really Get Boring At All. The Main Story Is The Reason You End Up Playing This Game At 5am Just Because You Want To See What Happens Next. An Instant Classic, Wouldnt Recommend For Kids Though

This game is very very good. You can tell it has been produced by the same guys behind teh excellent xbox game Chronicels of Riddick. There is the same high level of detail throughout, and excellent gameplay which moves away from the traditional elements of a FPS, adding something a little bit different. The graphics are top notch, not bad for a game early in the 360's life. There is good replay value on harder difficulties, and lots of hidden items to collect that unlock additional bits and pieces. I rented this one, but would have bought it.

Agree with most of the positive reviews, a very good game with a decent story to boot.

Have to say that this isn't technically or graphically astounding by any way.. but its a classic fun shooter, I did this over a weekend, was so much fun I could hardly stop playing!

A very good game. Amazing story, and it really captures the Graphic Novel (I believe that's how geeks justify reading comics) element. The control of the Darkness itself is a bit jerky and wierd at times, and occasionnally gets lost. But it's an excellent inclusion. An excellent FPS, with an added dimension. In more ways than one.

Why are people saying that this game is scary? It is fun violent and crazy, but scary..no. This is an amazing game with an amazing build up towards the end of the game, then has the worst ending to any game ever. Very fun, very violent but also very short. Anyone giving this game 5* must be very generous as this game is FAR FAR from perfect, but it is worth a play.

Not a bad game. Good graphics considering it has been out for some time. It was a very short game, hence the average score from me.

If you have NOT played Bioshock or Prey or even Condemned : Criminal Origins then The Darkness will probably seem like a good game. If, however, the aforementioned games have been on your playlist recently, then give The Darkness a miss or at the least, make it a low priority rent. Its not that its a bad game, its just a flawed game. The graphics, although detailed, can be a bit glitchy and the control scheme is unforgiving when controlling your 'Darkness' powers. As an example, when your character is walking around the game, he can seamlessly negotiate steps and staircases, yet when faced with a small rock or piece of rubble on the ground, you come to a complete stop and you have to go around this insignificant, insurmountable obstacle !! The games bad points ultimately detract from what is a solid story-line, and if a little more care in the testing phase of the game had been taken, it could have been a far better experience. As it is though, its just another thriller/horror FPS that fades into the background when compared to other games in the genre. Rent dont buy :(
