Alone in the Dark Description

Don't go into the park alone at night. You'll find all sorts there. Muggers, tramps, sexual deviants, and... maybe something a lot, lot worse. A lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ng time ago, the first Alone in the Dark game drew players into a world where fear was used as a weapon, creating a tense and ominous atmosphere. Now Atari, with the help of developer Eden Games, hopes to repeat the experience. Edward Carnby, the protagonist of the original game, has returned. Over the course of one frightful night, he must uncover the dark secrets that shroud Manhattan's long-protected 1.3 square miles of greenery, Central Park. Whatever you do, however, don't make the mistake of assuming this is a whodunnit. As you try to unravel the mystery, you'll be fighting for your life against all manner of 'ugly'. Eden Games has worked hard to make everything in the game work as it would in real life. If you think you could pick something up to bash a creature until gooey stuff comes out of it, you can in the game. If you think you could douse something in petrol and set it on fire in life, you can do it in the game. You'll put these aspects in the game to use not just during combat, but also in puzzle situations where you're left with just enough tools at your disposal to get the job done. The game unfolds in the vast open world of Central Park, with not a load screen in sight. Evil nasties will pursue you relentlessly across the park, not limited to the areas that spawned them. Fortunately, you'll find vehicles strewn around which you can use to avoid them or, if you prefer, use as weapons against them. It's probably too late to warn you against going into the park alone at night. But, you know, watch your back...

The trailers make it look good. Also all the stuff on you tube like real time stuff etc make it look even better. "Then why not 5 star?" I hear you ask. Basically because the fighting simulator doesn't look every good and theres not much clips on the fighting part. The scares looks good, the item containment looks good item combustion looks good even the driving ability looks good... just not the fights. (check trailers for more info on the technical part)

Great graphics and some interesting ideas are ruined by akward camera & contols. Having the inside of your jacket as your inventory is great and fire looks amazing - worth a rent if you like horror games.

The fire mechanics that Atari have been insisting we see before the games release are indeed just as good as they look. But as the game progresses, bugs increasingly get in the way - things that you have to burn in order to progress plot inexplicably become non-flammable, missing flame animations, cars silently explode, and so on. BUT these bugs aren't completely throughout the game and should only begin to affect gameplay just as you're nearing completion... Leaving you with a great aftertaste, as I'm sure you can imagine.

The attempt at giving free roaming is actually just a loss of structure; moving from puzzles and fighting in buildings at the beginning, to then leaving you to repeat the same task endlessly in the 'openness' of Central Park for the last half of the game (half? Felt like more), where then at the end you're again asked to solve some 'puzzles' for 5 minutes and then the game ends.

I really feel Atari wasted a fantastic opportunity here.

Some easy EASY achievement in this though, so if you're looking to boost your gamer score, this is for you. Achievements just for completing levels, for example.

There are a few bits in this game which will impress you, such as the fire effects and some of the cool set pieces. But it's all ruined by a terrible control scheme, cheesy plot and diologue and the most frustating drving sections I've seen in a long time. It has it's moments, which make it a perfect rental, but.... NEVER BUY!

When I first played the demo of this game on Xbox Live I was impressed - it was innovative and different and had a good atmosphere to it. A lot of work had obviously gone into making the environment realistic and engaging and the storyline seemed promising. And so I decided to ignore the harsh reviews it had received and give it a go. However, after a few hours spent plugging away at it last night, I can't help but feel a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the game does have it's good points. As I said, the environment is very impressive and the terrified reactions of the NPCs as an unknown supernatural force takes hold of New York help to immerse you into the game world. Also, the ability to make use of items in the surroundings to defeat enemies in a number of creative ways steers the title away from becoming simply another generic monster-ridden shooter. So why only give this game 2 stars then? In short, I believe it to be a fabulous idea which has been poorly executed. Edward (the game's foul-mouthed amnesiac hero) is slow and clumsy to control and this can become very frustrating, especially when you have several enemies in pursuit. The camera seems to have a mind of it's own and though the game gives you the option of first or third person view, there are points at which this option is taken away for one reason or another. Combine all this with an inventory which is, to say the very least, difficult to navigate and what you have is a game experience which, once the initial novelty has worn off, inevitably becomes irritating. As I mentioned earlier, I have played this game only for a few hours so far and so it may be that in the later chapters it will redeem itself. But then, given the gameplay so far, can I really find the motivation to pop it back into my console and give it another whirl?

This game starts off brilliantly with fast paced movie-like action and atmosphere but slowly drags into an unchallenging bore, I would recomend it if you wer bored. alot better games of the same kind out ther!!

right what to say about this game positive: i like the story and it has easy achievements. Negative: everything else (the driving is severly broken as is the combat, inventory, glitches, at one point i hit a jump and the car flew into the air miles above the ground. C'mon thats very basic programming which has gone wrong. im strugling to complete it and not because of the difficulty

Tom first of all the previews of the game play looked really high quality and so did the graphics. I rented this game simply because it looked good and there was so many things and idea's. Im a capcom fan and i found this game not enjoyable because of the amount of faults I found in the game. The fighting is not perfect and also driving the cars is not good at all. This game did not seem new even though the idea's are ok sometimes. If you like capcom games I would recomend not buying this one.
