| A PSone cult classic reborn on the PSP. Oddly enough, despite the 8 years since this game's original release, not a great deal has changed in the RPG genre- and this game still manages to feel every bit as it did in its day. Whether thats a good thing is personal opinion, but for me, after the initial few hours, Breath of Fire 3 becomes one of the finest RPG's ever released. You play Ryu, the last of a race of dragons, whose people have been exterminated centuries ago by a race of Guardians. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery, Ryu sets out to find out who and what he really is- and what happened to his people. Sadly, the first few hours of the game belie its true brilliance. you spend the first part of the game as a kid, hanging around with a bunch of kind miscreants who take him in. Whilst this part of the game is averagely entertaining RPG fare, it soon livens up, and once the story really kicks in, you'll find yourself both intrigued and surprised by Ryu's discoveries. The game employs a typical RPG turn-based combat system, with a few twists to keep it fresh, such as an examine ability that lets you learn your enemies attacks, and a master / apprentice system. Unfortunately, there are rather a lot of random battles, and your characters seem to need a lot of experience in order to level up, but thankfully these don't detract too much. Graphically, the game is a mix of 3D backgrounds- sadly unimproved since their PSone debut, which makes them look a little blocky- and beautifully drawn and well animated 2D characters. Its a strange mix but one that gives the game a unique style. Music wise, you're treated to some great sound effects, but some rather weird almost jazz-y music, which doesnt seem to fit the game, really. Overall though, theres a lot to like about Breath of Fire 3, and the game's lengthy story- some 40+ hours- soon becomes highly engrossing and full of surprising twists. | ||
