Black Description

BLACK is the explosive first-person shooter from the award-winning Criterion studio, makers of the hit Burnout series. The game pays homage to every adrenaline-fueled Hollywood blockbuster to deliver hours of bang, boom, and rat-a-tat-tat. Bullets pulverise plaster and splinter boards; bigger ammo breaks down doors and shears concrete from buildings in fat chunks. When you finish a level, it'll look like a tornado hit it. This is no simulation-based, covert action shooter—this is an intense action gunner set to revolutionise video game shooting, squeezing out more power than anything before. Overt Action: BLACK operatives do not hide in shadows or sneak behind walls waiting for the right time to engage their foe - they destroy the wall, the enemy, and anything else that gets in their way. The Guns Are the Stars: An explosive arsenal of bleeding-edge weaponry lets you experience the awe-inspiring power of the world's most exotic lethal firepower. If You Can See It, You Can Shoot It: Reduce cities to rubble in a world where virtually nothing is impervious to your bullets. Get Your Blood Pumping: Adrenaline is your friend. Visceral, destructive action sucks you deep into the gameplay as you blaze and blast your own path through open-ended environments. BLACK-Style Kills: Use destructible worlds and explosive objects to take out enemies in cover, frag multiple enemies at once, or just wreak massive destruction for its own sake.

This is a quality FPS, but it takes some getting used to, as they have slowed the horizontal controls to make it easier to aim.

It's a very decent game but the combination of a lack of checkpoints and lengthy missions can get very annoying. The 'shoot everything' motif is a little misleading as well. There aren't that many instances where this can be done too much real effect and it doesn't have that much influence on the game. Overall it is one of the better FPS but 1 or 2 little things stop it from being really amazing.

3/5 - why what happened? Black is an interesting title which doesn't do a lot wrong. However the whole destroy everything aspect is very over-hyped and barely in existence as far as game mechanics go - sure stuff blows up and walls can be destroyed - but - most walls and most scenery stays the same way and don't blow up. Shooting stuff to fall on people - yeah maybe once in the entire game is this even possible, so basically all this aspect does is cause slowdown. The game itself is very short, only 8 levels ranging form 20mins to 60mins each, with no saving mid level and very few checkpoints which can annoy on some of the more annoying levels. Some enemies need about five headshots to die and this can be very difficult if you're surrounded by enemies with RPGs being fired at you. You cannot jump - so what? - well you left a medback on the ledge above its only half a foot up and you can see it but tough - you cannot go back. Worth a rent as once completed there is no incentive to play it again.
