Ape Academy Description

Remember Ape Escape? The work of Sony Computer Entertainment America, the PlayStation classic involved rounding up a pack of cheeky escaped primates with a variety of wacky techniques. Light sabres, nets and helicopters all featured in the quest to put the cheeky simians back in their cages, and now the game is being reborn to feature in the release line-up for the PSP handheld console. Going by the name of Ape Academy, the sequel bursts onto the PSP's widescreen with a new generation of apes to capture. Taking a leaf out of the Mario Party book, not to mention a certain other monkey-derived, subgame-rich popular title, the game takes the form of a series of minigames, and, taking advantage of the PSP's WiFi capabilities, you can challenge all-comers instantly, with no wires attached. There are 45 of these minigames included so it's sure to take you a while to master the lot and declare yourself champion of monkey-related madness. Whether it's the one metre dash, or any other of the skill and timing-based games on offer, there are lessons for everyone in this academy, not least that of learning to love your mischievous animal buddies.

Last review a bit harsh. I thought. It's a game called ape acedemy - how 'grown up' do you expect it to be? I found no problem with the response of the controls. The basic premise is of playing a lot of fairly quick fire mini games in order to win grids in a kind of tic-tac-toe game. Some are quite fun to play, others less so. Given the game is evidently aimed at younger gamers, some of the games may be a tad too difficult as well. Overall, I wouldn't suggest you rush to buy ape academy, but it should provide a few hours amusement if you rent it.

If you have left nursery dont bother with this game. The only games you can play when you first run the title are like simon says, pressing a certain button when you are told to. However the game is not very responsive so I found I needed to press a button more than once for the game to recognise the keypress. The story is that you are at a kind of monkey boot camp. But the games you start with are so patronising I switched it off within 10 minutes. Chris

  • From the creators of the critically acclaimed Ape EscapeTM series

With over 45 mini games to play, from monkey bowling to pot fighting, there are always exciting new ways to monkey around. Take control of your favourite chimp and work your way through the school years by winning these wacky mini-games! Here are but a few to whet your appetite...

  • One Meter Dash - It's all in the reflexes as up to four players compete to see who is quickest off the blocks. Ready! Steady! Wait for it... can you handle the tension or will it be a false start?

  • Dodge Ball - Normal dodge ball is too easy for these chimps: they have to play it over a pit of boiling lava! Watch out: those simian spinners throw a mean over-arm...

  • Scissors, Paper, Stone - A variation on the playground classic. But in space. With jet packs. And laser guns.

  • Geronimo - What kind of monkey would jump out of a plane without a parachute? These ones apparently! Chase them down and give them their 'chutes before they make a nasty mess on the beach below...
