Red Faction: Guerrilla (Xbox 360) review

Red Faction has been gone for a while but now it returns and does so in a big way. Veterans of the series will immediately notice the games switch in perspective. No longer a first person shooter; Red Faction has switched to a third person perspective - fortunately, this pays off well. In the story mode you play as Mason. Veterans of the series will immediately notice the games switch in perspective. No longer a first person shooter; Red Faction has switched to a third person perspective - fortunately, this pays off well. In the story mode you play as Mason. A traumatising event early in the game quickly encourages you to join the resistance. From here you’ll be tasked by your comrades to complete a series of objectives in an open world environment. This could work really well except that far too much of this ‘open world environment’ is, well….open; there’s nothing there. You’ll too often find yourself driving long distances with little more than a couple of other vehicles in view. This becomes much less of an issue when you reach your destination and break loose. The excellent destruction in this game is currently unmatched. You can take down entire buildings and no cover is safe. Instead of running through a structure eliminating targets, just rig the supports and watch it from a safe distance. Various firearms (most standard, some unique), vehicles and mechs keep the destruction from going stale before the end. The thin but serviceable plot does a decent job of driving the action forward. Multiplayer proves to the main attraction here. A good variety of multiplayer modes coupled with in game ‘packs’ that serve as boosters not to mention full destructibility from the story mode and you have a game with lasting appeal. ‘Packs’ are (literally) strapped to your back and allow various effects. Rhino lets you charge through people and buildings, Jetpack gives you momentary flight and (my favourite) Concussion blasts out a radius charge that knocks over anyone in range. Many more packs are available in game and are unique to the multiplayer (with the exception of the Jetpack). Red Faction’s graphics look great; they’re sharp, clean and make good use of anti aliasing. Sadly the aforementioned open spaces can hurt the overall presentation. Destruction is physics based meaning buildings fall based on how you hit them – no canned animations here. Sound is solid; voice acting may lean on the B movie a bit much but then it’s not unlike its story. I recommend Red Faction Guerrilla to anyone interested in third person action adventure / open world games. Even if you’ve skipped previous entries in the series, this is still a good place to start. skate.2 (PS3) review

Possibly my favourite game on PS3. I have spent hours and hours just messing around on this game. Trying to land a HUGE gap or drop in or similar. I probably spent more time doing this than actually playing the "campaign". I have completed it 100% with all trophies yet still get drawn back to it. Fable II (Xbox 360) review

The idea of relationships with other NPCs is an interesting idea but is handled awfully. You don't really care about other characters very much which makes the moral choices the more easier. Oh yes, morality, the other big talking point. In this game the choices you make influence the world around you in major ways. For example, early on when you start the game as a child the little decisions you make like whether to aid or turn in a pickpocket will influence the world of Albion significantly making it either a lovely developed world or a sleazy prostitute infested hellhole. You then develop into an adult hero and really begin the main quest. It's quite boring and not very inspiring. The fact your character only communicates through facial expressions is a little annoying and detracts from the big moments. One character you will however become attached to is your dog. He is really man's best friend and can aid you by finding treasure. You can teach it tricks and it will begin to mirror your character. If you are corrupt and evil you will look mean and intimidating with horns and an attractive lava-like complexion. Your dog will also look appropriately menacing as well. Because your dog will be the only character you will connect with the "final decision" at the end is all the more hard. (Play it to see!). Other aspects include owning property and buying business. Combat is fairly weak involving melee, ranged and will (magic) based attacks. The weapons are not very varied and the attacks with spells are also lacking unfortunately. Overall competent but not really inspiring effort. P.S Sorry for the wall of text but RPGs are large and have many aspects to review! More »
